La Hollande ? Eh bien non, ce n’est pas un pays ! C’est le nom de deux provinces des Pays-Bas, qui en comptent douze, et qui constituent, c’est vrai, la partie la plus visitée, la plus connue du royaume. Résultat, il est communément accepté que la Hollande soit le nom du pays.Autre idée reçue : La Haye… Eh non, ce n’est pas la capitale des Pays-Bas, même si elle en a toutes les apparences (ministères, ambassades, etc.). La capitale est bien Amsterdam : c’est dans cette ville que se déroule l’investiture des monarques néerlandais. Son nom est, à l’origine, lié à l’eau, puisqu’il signifie « la digue sur l’Amstel ».
Au fil de l’Histoire des Pays-Bas, terres et eaux, souvent confondues, ont enfin trouvé chacune leur place et semblent s’y tenir. Naguère, leurs relations ont été bien tumultueuses. Sans doute est-ce à cause de cette difficulté que le peuple hollandais a acquis son opiniâtreté, son esprit méthodique, son goût de la réflexion et son amour de la liberté, magistralement illustré par l’accueil qu’il a, de tout temps, fait à tous les exilés de l’Histoire.Amsterdam reste une destination où chacun se côtoie sans crainte d’afficher sa singularité. On y respire un parfum de cosmopolitisme bon enfant dans un décor de village aux dimensions mondiales, qui globalement respecte encore les droits de chaque minorité.
Et en dehors des tulipes, aux Pays-Bas, quand la nuit éclaire les intérieurs cossus le long des canaux, on y cultive un art de vivre à l’ancienne, donnant tout son sens à cette notion parfois surannée que l’on nomme gezelligheid, un concept intraduisible, entre convivialité, bien-être et sociabilité.Retrouvez également notre guide dédié Amsterdam.

The polite lady in the office didn’t speak much English when I visited, but the process to rent a scooter from is quick & efficient. You can message on Facebook to see what stock they have available or just turn up. Side Note: I’m not sure the logo for Bikes gives off the best impression XD. Farang guy zooming on a Vespa without a helmet… With an almost perfect feedback score on Google & Facebook, you’re in good hands with them. They also have a garage next door to the rental shop where they’ll perform regular maintenance. I’ve rented a Mio from here which had squeaky breaks due to water in the drum brake. They quickly swapped this bike to another hassle-free. Although the variety of bikes they stock is a lot smaller, they offer very competitive pricing and are conveniently located at the Huay Kaew end of Santitham. If you’ve seen the Yamaha Tricity, and thought heck, I’d love to give that bike a try. Then send a message to Cheap Charlie and they are renting the Tricity for only 3850 per month. The unique two wheels at the front (3 wheels overall) of this scooter offer much more stability than a tradition two-wheeled scooter. Charlie Rentals also offers fantastic monthly prices with Clicks & Scoopys as low as 1900 baht per month.

Vanessa’s is another good option for tourists, offering both short and long term scooter letting with a lot of Scoopy stock, which is great for beginners. The team are responsive on Facebook, but often sell out fast during peak season due to the competitive monthly pricing. Note: I’ve tried a couple of Click 125i’s from Vanessa. Both had 45k+ miles and felt/sounded a little rough around the edges. Disclaimer: I’m sure there are plenty of other great scooter rental services in Chiang Mai. The businesses listed above have been verified with hundreds of positive reviews and tailor themselves towards travellers & tourists. Feel free to comment at the end with any great scooter rental shops that I’ve missed.
